On Wednesday, 20th November 2024, at 16:00, the seminar "Beyond the Veil: The Legal Status of Women in Iran" will take place in Classroom 2 of Palazzo De Simone, Piazza Arechi II, in Benevento. The event is organised by the University of Sannio to explore the complex legal, social, and cultural dynamics that shape the lives of Iranian women.

The seminar will be introduced by Professor Katia Fiorenza, Associate Professor of Comparative Law at the University of Sannio. The event will feature an intervention by Professor Massimo Papa, Full Professor of Comparative Law at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" and specialist in Islamic Law and the laws of Islamic countries.

The seminar aims to explore how the legal status of women in Iran serves as a synecdoche for the entire legal system of the Islamic Republic. Beyond the veil, imposed by rigid Islamic norms, a series of challenges and contradictions within the Iranian context emerge. The complexity of the legal framework is intertwined with cultural, social, and economic issues that fuel calls for greater democratic openness, supported by increasingly active protest movements within the country.

This event offers an opportunity to better understand the tensions between religious norms and civil rights and to reflect on the role of Iranian women within an evolving system.
