Mario Marinelli, born on the September 16th 1983, is Associate Professor in Transportation Engineering at the Department of Engineering of the University of Sannio (Benevento) since December 2019. He received from the Polytechnic University of Bari the Master's degree with honours in Computer Engineering, Intelligent Systems Curriculum, in 2007, and the Ph.D. degree in Roads and Transport Systems, Land and Technological Innovation in 2013.
From 2017 until 2019, he was Assistant Professor in Transportation Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental, Land, Building Engineering, and Chemistry of the Polytechnic University of Bari, where he teached in the Bachelor and Master's degree courses in Environmental Engineering. Currently, he teaches in the Bachelor and Master's degree courses in Civil Engineering at the University of Sannio, where he is member of the Ph.D. board in Information Technology for Engineering since 2021. He is member of the Italian Society of Transportation Academicians (SIDT) since 2012.
He got the qualification as Associate Professor in Transportation Engineering in 2018 and the qualification as Full Professor in Transportation Engineering in 2021.
He participated in different research projects and working groups of national and international relevance, including international collaborations with the University of Denizli and the Institute of Science and Technology at the Technical University of Istanbul (Turkey).
He is the author of more than 40 publications in journals, book chapters and conferences of international and national relevance. Since 2009, he attended as speaker at several national and international conferences. He was member of the organizing committee of the XXII SIDT National Scientific Seminar, held at the Polytechnic University of Bari in 2017.
His research activity is characterized by the continuous study of new quantitative approaches based on Soft Computing techniques for solving different problems related to transportation engineering. He published several works focusing on the topic of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The proposed models are based on the use of Soft Computing techniques, in particular Fuzzy logic and Possibility Theory. These models are addressed in reproducing user choice behaviour in the context of an Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS). He also organized Stated Preference (SP) surveys with the help of driving simulators. International scientific cooperation focus on optimization techniques for network design and traffic assignment. Currently, his research interests also focus on the study and development of optimization models for transportation management and logistics.
